Meet Your eLearning Teacher!

Hello 4th and 5th grade families!  My name is Leslie Dreyer and I will be your eLearning teacher!  I moved to Colorado in 2015 after spending years flying out here from Illinois to explore the mountains, visit friends, and spend time with my Godson (who is now a 6th grader).  I love to hike and have happily invested a lot of time traveling to mountain towns all across the state.  Exploring Colorado led to a deep desire to visit every National Park in our country!  I've been to 18 of our National Parks in the last five years.  Most of the parks I've been to are in the Western part of the U.S..  Yellowstone and Zion National Park are two of my favorites!

During the summer of 2019 I spent a week soaking up the sun in Florida's three National Parks.  I made a quick stop in Key Biscayne, took an airboat tour of the Everglades, and then took a two hour & fifteen minute boat ride to the very remote and unique Dry Tortugas National Park!  The Everglades were truly stunning.  The swamp was beautiful and I saw more gators than I expected to see.  Dry Tortugas was well worth the time it takes to get there.  It combines two of my favorite things; history and nature.  The island is home to a prison from the Civil War era.  It's also known for its many sea turtles, one my favorite animals!  Have you been to either of these parks?

I grew up in Illinois.  It's very different than Colorado.  Despite its humidity and lack of mountains, I still appreciate being able to call Illinois "home".  I grew up close to Lake Michigan, a massive and gorgeous lake.  When I visit my parents, who still live in Illinois, we go to the lake to search for beach glass.  We find many pieces in beautiful shades of blue and green.  Most of the pieces we find are clear or brown.  Every once in awhile we find a unique color like purple or red.  My mom and I like to compete to see who can find the best piece!  You can see beach glass in my hand and the hands of my mom, dad, and brother.  Try and spot the beach glass in the sand in the other picture!

Illinois is also where I started my teaching career.  I taught 4th grade for ten years at a school surrounded by cornfields and horse stables!  While I was teaching there I discovered a passion for working with gifted and talented students.  After earning my Masters Degree in Elementary Reading, I took more college courses and attended several trainings to become a certified GT teacher.  I love working to understand the ways GT kiddos think, finding ways to challenge them, and supporting them as they learn more about themselves.

Since moving to Colorado I've taught grades 2-5 and spent two years as a teacher in the Discovery program.  I am thrilled to be on yet another adventure in education: eLearning!  I can't wait to build a community of individual learners and friends in our virtual classroom.  This is a true adventure, as we are facing a lot of unknowns.  Are you feeling a bit nervous?  It's okay.  I am too!  But as we travel "into the unknown" together, I can't help but feel excited and enthusiastic about what lies ahead!

Here are some pictures from past adventures for you to enjoy!

"A person who has good thoughts cannot ever be ugly.  You can have a wonky nose and a crooked mouth and a double chin and stick-out teeth, but if you have good thoughts it will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely."
